Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
