European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
