Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City
Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles southwest of Boston.
Wu appeared on a local podcast recently to answer comments from the White House, which had labeled her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is locked down by contract so that no one, even the president, can undo it.
Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at people and cities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." Wu concluded by emphasizing her support for the city, saying, "Fully committed for our city."
The President's Comments and FIFA Involvement
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the international summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the White House and presented World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to the president as gifts.
Earlier, President Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being burned. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's great."
He continued, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information
President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about relocating games from other host cities, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is scheduled to be held from 11 June to 19 July next summer.
