Adolescent Discovered Deceased Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The investigation heard how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken remains attracted online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The inquest heard that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The hearing heard from school personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The court learned his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably untruths were subsequently embellished and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was released whilst investigations continued."
The official determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to discern his intent."
